After months with few reports regarding the beloved neo-Western drama, Yellowstone fans are finally getting some good news. After scheduling conflicts and delays, Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 is finally getting a release date.
Yellowstone Season 5 will return in November 2024 with the final episodes of the series. In addition, two new Yellowstone spin-offs will also be premiering next year as well, 1944 and 2024.
2024 is set to be a big year for the world of Yellowstone. While the titular series may be coming to an end, the Dutton’s story will still live on.
New Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 Release Date
While an exact date has not been revealed, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that the final installment of Yellowstone will return in November 2024.
With this return date, it will be two years between Season 5 Part 1 and Part 2. This will be the longest gap between episodes that the show has seen.
Between scheduling conflicts with Kevin Costner, who plays John Dutton, and the writers’ strike, Yellowstone got delayed from the summer of 2023 to November 2023. However, it will finally premiere in November 2024, more than a year from its original intended release.
Costner announced earlier in the year that he would be leaving the series over creative differences, scheduling conflicts, and being offered less money. The star has been keeping busy as he serves as a producer, writer, director, and actor in the upcoming Western epic Horizon.
Though Costner is departing the series, there is the possibility that he will appear in a couple of episodes to wrap up his storyline.
According to Esquire, Costner won’t sign off on a return until he is happy with the way Sheridan chooses to “end his character’s arc for good.”
The Story of the Duttons Continues With Existing and New Spin-Offs and Prequels
While Yellowstone may be coming to an end after five seasons, the story of the Dutton family lives on. After two successful prequels, 1883 and 1923, two more spinoffs will be joining the franchise.
“Within five years, we grew Yellowstone from a hit U.S. cable show with five million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions — and we’re just getting started,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios.
“On the heels of 1883 and 1923‘s success, our new planned spinoffs, 1944 and 2024, will take audiences on a thrilling, new, and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon — thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan,” he continued.
1944 and 2024 Cast and Plot Details
As of now, no plot details have been released for 1944 and 2024. 2024, which was initially slated to have Yellowstone in the title, was going to premiere in December 2023 following the end of Yellowstone. However, the delay in the release of Yellowstone has pushed back the premiere of the sequel series.
“The global success of Yellowstone continues to thrill and excite us at 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch. This has been such an exhilarating ride with our partners at MTV Entertainment Studios and we can’t wait to bring 1944 and 2024 to audiences everywhere,” said David Glasser, CEO, 101 Studios.
According to Deadline, the franchise will continue to expand the Dutton’s ranching empire both past and present with “new locations and characters” and “some crossover characters.”
While no cast members have been confirmed, Matthew McConaughey has been in talks with show creator Taylor Sheridan to lead the sequel series following in the footsteps of Yellowstone.
“He seems like a natural fit. We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do,’” Sheridan said about McConaughey to Entertainment Weekly.
