Tragedy has hit Yellowstone ranch. And we’re all holding our breath to see how many Duttons the family will bury.
Last Sunday’s episode of 1923, “The War Has Come Home”, broke our hearts, to say the least, with the devastating death of John Dutton Sr. (James Badge Dale) following a surprise attack by the vindictive Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn).
The ambush left Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford), the patriarch of the family, hurt pretty badly, and most of us fear that, like his nephew, he’s done for.
So, is Jacob Dutton really dead? Is this the end of Ford’s journey on Taylor Sheridan’s brainchild? Find that out in this article.
But first, let’s help you get a grasp of how Jacob ended up at death’s door in the first place. If you haven’t watched the latest episode of 1923, beware of major spoilers.
Why Banner Creighton Attacked the Duttons
The second episode of 1923 saw Jacob hang Creighton and several other shepherds as punishment for stealing his grazing land and shooting at Jack Dutton (Darren Mann).
Unfortunately for the Duttons, Creighton survives to exact his revenge in the following episode.
Yes, we always knew Creighton would be the Dutton family’s enemy right from the premiere episode. Nonetheless, we had no idea how vicious the Scottish sheepman can get until last Sunday when he pulled out his Tommy gun and opened fire on the Duttons.
While Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren) and Emma (Marley Shelton) walked away unscathed, their husbands were out of luck.
A bullet passed right through John’s eye, and he died instantly.
On the other hand, Jacob took multiple bullets but didn’t give in just yet. Cara and the rest of the family took him home to tend to his wounds as they awaited professional medical help, which arrived shortly after.
Although Jack and his sweet lover Elizabeth, were also shot, they’re likely to make it through.

Jacob Dutton’s Dying Wish
As Jacob lay on the table, dying, he made his last wish clear—Spencer should return to Yellowstone ranch.
“Spencer must come home now. You get him home. Cara, get him home.” Jacob implored before he passed out.
By the end of episode 3 of 1923, there was no confirmation that Jacob was dead.
But Cara’s letter to Spencer gave us little hope as it reeked of despair.
“Spencer,
Your brother has been killed. By the time you receive this letter, I suppose your uncle has been killed, as well. Your nephew has been wounded. This ranch and your legacy are in peril. War has descended upon this place and your family. Whatever war you fight within yourself must wait. You must come home and fight this one!” Cara’s letter reads.
“I suppose your uncle has been killed as well,” insinuated that Jacob won’t make it.

1923 Without Harrison Ford
It’s almost impossible to envision 1923 without Ford’s Jacob Dutton.
John Dutton Sr. is already gone. Spencer, James Dutton’s sole surviving child, hasn’t shown any interest in running Yellowstone ranch. And Jack might be too young to step into the shoes of his great-uncle.
This presents the ultimate question—would Taylor Sheridan kill off Ford’s character?
It wouldn’t be a shocker if he did, as Elsa Dutton suffered the same fate. But then again, it would change the entire game for the Yellowstone universe.
Still, most fans hope the Dutton family patriarch will recover miraculously.
We expect to discover the truth in the next episode, which airs next Sunday, 8 January 2023, on Paramount+.
Either way, we’re sure that the Duttons will hit back. We just don’t know when, how, or the ramifications of their retaliation.
