The award-winning film Wind River (2017) is finally getting a sequel. Wind River: The Next Chapter will pick up following a wave of murders on the Wind River Reservation.
Wind River was directed and written by Taylor Sheridan. However, Sheridan does not appear to have any ties with the sequel. Wind River: The Next Chapter will be directed by Kari Skogland, with a screenplay from Patrick Massett and John Zinman.
Castle Rock Entertainment first announced the sequel back in November 2022. Following its favorable critic reviews and strong viewership numbers, the series’ return has been much anticipated.
Wind River: The Next Chapter Release Date & Trailer
As of now, there is no official release date for Wind River: The Next Chapter. However, filming wrapped up in April 2023, and sources expect the film will be released in theaters in early 2024.
Currently, there is no trailer for Wind River: The Next Chapter. However, if the sources are correct and the Western crime drama is coming out in early 2024, we can likely expect a trailer within the next couple of months.
Wind River: The Next Chapter Plot
The synopsis for the film reads, “In Wind River: The Next Chapter, terror has escalated on the reservation as a series of ritualistic murders remain unsolved. The FBI therefore enlists the aid of Chip Hanson (Sensmeier), a newly minted tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game, who on the heels of his appearance in Wind River, becomes embroiled in a desperate and dangerous fight between the authorities, a vigilante and the reservation he calls home.”
As the original movie took home the Cannes Film Festival Award for Un Certain Regard for Best Director as well as the National Board of Review Top Ten Independent Film Award, we can expect good things from the sequel. Stay tuned for more information on Wind River: The Next Chapter.
Wind River: The Next Chapter Cast
Martin Sensmeier will return as the lead, reprising his role as Chip Hanson, the brother of Natalie Hanson whose murder was investigated in the first film. Sensmeier is best known for his roles in Westworld (2018), Yellowstone (2019), and 1883 (2022).
Marvel stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olson will not be returning to reprise their roles as Cory Lambert and Jane Banner. Renner’s character Cory was a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tracker Agent while Olson played the part of FBI Agent Jane Banner.
Gil Birmingham will return as Martin Hanson, Chris’ father. Birmingham is best known for his roles in the Twilight Saga and Yellowstone (2018-).
Also joining the main cast are Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty), Alan Ruck (Succession), Scott Eastwood (Pacific Rim: The Uprising), Chaske Spencer (The English), Kali Reis (Black Flies), and Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon). Other cast include Joshua Odjick, Isaac Arellanes, Phillip Forest Lewitski, Jeremy Warner, Faith Louissaint, Gail Maurice, and David Abbott.
Where Was Wind River: The Next Chapter Filmed?
Production for Wind River: The Next Chapter began in January 2023. Filming took place in Calgary, Alberta.
